Fun Facts About Biblical Storytelling

Did you know that “learning the sacred stories of Scripture by heart and sharing them with others is both an ancient-future art and a powerful spiritual practice?”1

Did you know that for the past two years I have been immersed in a master level certification course in Biblical Storytelling through the Network of Biblical Storytellers’ Academy program?  These past two years have given me new insights into Scripture, expanded my understanding of it as well as increased my joy in telling it. Some of the things that I have learned include: what Biblical Storytelling is, how it is relevant for the church today, how to internalize stories and learn them by heart (not memorize), how to use non-verbal ways of communication, how to use technology in storytelling and how to coach others as they learn to tell stories.

Did you know that Biblical Storytelling is “a spiritual discipline that entails first committing to deep memory a narrative text of the Hebrew Scriptures or the New Testament and then engaging with it in a lively telling as a sacred event that binds teller and listener in community?”2

Did you know that we are no longer “in the ‘print-literate’ culture of the past five hundred years but are in the digital communication culture of the twenty-first century? Digital culture is not just about technology but it includes a re-emphasis on spiritual formation practices.” 3

Did you know that you are also a storyteller? We all tell stories every day...think about Facebook and Instagram. In our digital culture our lives revolve around stories: television, the movies, YouTube.

Did you know that I also have a YouTube channel - Kathy Smedley  - intotheirhearts. My goal is for the children to tell and to draw other children in as they see stories being told by kids. Children are fascinated by other children especially on YouTube and children are natural storytellers.

“I will open my mouth and tell a story; I will speak about things that were hidden, that happened a long time ago. Things that we have heard and known, that our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from our children; we will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD and His might.” ~Psalm 78:2-4
